TMC Racing Featured in Latitude 38

Berkeley, CA - TMC Racing has been chosen by Berkeley Marine Center to be featured in their April 2008 Latitude 38 advertising spot. This Latitude 38 article and the accompanying photo content will also be posted on their web site.

We have been working closely with BMC since we started our program back in April of 2004. They have provided us with a broad range of performance optimization, equipment upgrade and repair services and we are very thankful for the great job they’ve been doing for us! Our relationship is such that they operate as part of our core team. It really makes a difference when you have a partner that’s emotionally invested in your success! We look forward to more mutual success in the future.

Also included in the April 2008 issue of Latitude 38 is an update on the success TMC Racing had in the all the 2007/08 Midwinter series we raced in. Check us out in this issue or you can find the content online at www.latitude38.com.

How Do You Build Success?

When we started our program in April of 2004 we put together a new team of folks to launch our racing campaign. Early on we struggled with the whole issue of “How do you build success?”

Now that we have kicked off our 5th season, we are able to look back and see what we’ve down that worked and what missed the mark. Here are our Five Key Factors for Success:

  1. Always have a stretch goal – when it’s all said and done you’ll find you’ve achieved more with a stretch goal in mind than if you just go out and compete haphazardly. We all know that goal has always been powerful.
  2. Equipment preparation is foundational – it’s easier to succeed when you know your machine is optimized for maximum performance and maintained to perfection. Unnecessary gear failures and breakdowns rob us success from the team. The confidence the team experiences from using the best equipment available breeds more success!
  3. Training, training and more training – in the 2007 Worlds we raced against the World Champion Brazilian team who, after racing in the 2005 Worlds in England, trained six (6) days a week for four (4) months to win the 2006 Australian Worlds. Admittedly these guys are pro sailors, and the training example they set shows us all what it takes to win at the highest level of competition. Our training goal for the team is to be able to execute all of our maneuvers without having to think about them – and we still have a ways to go to get there. It’s important for the entire team to be committed to continuous improvement!
  4. Set a series of small challenges to use as intermediate steps to your main goal – there is nothing more motivating than winning, and a series of “small” wins builds the momentum that leads to “big” wins. As a team, we’ve been working on the goal of always finishing in 1st, 2nd or 3rd place. Every time we go racing we’re committed to our goal of Win, Place or Show! Consistency of results is what wins regattas.
  5. Celebrating every win is important – in support of the understanding that every win counts, celebrating your success recognizes all of the team’s individual contributions and provides another way for the team to bond and grow. We know that to be “in relationship” with someone you need to work together, recreate together and break bread together. At the very bottom line of the success equation we’ve found that; “Relationships Determine Results!”

When you utilize these principles, as we have, you’ll see your team’s level of efficacy grow and you’ll experience the satisfaction of achievement as you evolve the level of success in your program. All the best to your future success!

GU Sports

TMC Racing is very grateful for the ongoing support of our newest sponsor, GU Sports. Leading the energy replenishment industry in technological advancements, GU Sports created the first Energy Gel for athletes and also makes the GU20 Sports Drink. We have experienced first-hand the effects of energy depletion and dehydration during long days on the race course. We use these products from GU Sports as the ultimate solution to this problem. These products help us perform at our very best race in and race out!

Successful Strategy Implementation

We formed TMC Racing in March 2004 with the objective of utilizing our sailboat racing program as a lab for the development of the tools and services we deliver to our clients. We set our goal to place in the top 10 at the 2007 J/24 World Championships. Here are our results to date:

June 2004: North American Championships - 22nd place
May 2005:U.S. National Championships - 6th place
June 2005:Western Regional Championships - 1st place (Qualified as one of six boats representing the U.S. at the 2006 World Championships in Melbourne, Australia)

How did we do this? We applied the “5 key factors for successful strategy implementation” that we use with our clients:

  1. Clearly communicated goals: To place in the top 10 at the 2007 J/24 World Championships
  2. Consistent leadership direction: Consistently communicated next steps and reinforced goals
  3. Multi-level executive and operational sponsorship: Provided the capital investment necessary to have the best equipment and engaged a world-class coach to develop and facilitate our training program
  4. Commitment of personnel and funds to get the job done: Every team member committed their time, money and expertise on and off of the race course
  5. Comprehensive project and change management plan: A schedule of regattas, personnel resources, maintenance, travel and logistics were organized as our competition road map. We conducted Myers-Briggs and SDI assessments to accelerate the development of our high performing team

In 2005, Touchstone Management Consultants (TMC) delivered the same level of success to our major clients, using the same framework for strategy implementation. We assisted a Fortune 10 global energy company with an $18 billion acquisition and designed the “Business Readiness” framework that focused on minimizing business interruption and being able to deliver the projected acquisition value to Wall Street. Their CEO stated that our efforts “...hit the ball out of the park”. We also designed and delivered the change management plan for a global IT project that the top management touted as “the poster child for change management success”.

More than a framework or words, TMC delivers results with 100% client satisfaction!
